Rhode Island might be tiny, but it holds more heart per square mile than almost anywhere I've been. My parents retired here back in 2012, and ever since, I've spent a good chunk of my year, somewhere between 20 and 30% of my time, wandering its back roads, farm stands, and little shopping streets looking for the local rhode island business that makes this state feel like nowhere else on earth. Over more than a decade of visits, I've built up a real list of favorite local Rhode Island businesses and I can't wait to share them with you in this blog post.
I believe to really love a place is to love the people that make it up. And Rhode Island is full of people pouring creativity, art, and genuine care into small businesses that you simply cannot replicate anywhere else. If you're the kind of person who'd rather find a hidden gem than another big box store, this one's for you.
Skip Providence — Head for the Quiet Corners Instead
I'll be honest with you: I actively avoid Providence and Cranston. I hate the traffic, I hate hunting for parking, and honestly, that's not the Rhode Island I fell in love with. There are truly some great small businesses on Wickenden St. though, so if you find yourself in Providence you're guaranteed to find gems there. In my favorite experiences are in the quiet, small towns and farms tucked along the coast and countryside. That's where you'll find the businesses worth supporting.
My Favorite Spots to Shop Local in Rhode Island
Historic Tiverton Four Corners
This is one of my absolute favorite places in the entire state. It has that perfect blend of historic charm and thoughtfully curated small shops, the kind of place where you can spend an entire afternoon wandering without ever feeling rushed.
While you're there, don't miss Groundswell, walking in feels like stepping into the best specialty store in Paris. It's polished, artful, and clearly run by people who care deeply about what they're curating.
Newport (But Not the Obvious Part)
Everyone knows Newport for the mansions and Thames S., but my favorite way to experience it is by seeking out the hole-in-the-wall shops tucked away from the main strip. Those are the spots that make Newport feel like a discovery instead of a checklist.
Watch Hill
If you want that authentic East Coast beach town feeling — salt air, weathered shingles, a slower pace — Watch Hill delivers it perfectly. It's one of those places that feels like it hasn't changed much over the years, in the best possible way.
South Kingstown
South Kingstown has quietly become one of my favorite shopping destinations, largely thanks to The Farmers Daughter. It's the kind of shop that makes you rethink what a farm stand or country store can be.
Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown
Sweet Berry Farm is unforgettable — it feels like stepping into a high-end farm stand, but somehow it still keeps that quaint, unpretentious charm. It's proof that a small business can feel elevated without losing its soul.
Support a local rhode island business from home
Solette beauty is a Rhode island beauty brand and although we don't have a physical lotion, our orders arrive to you with a little Rhode Island small business magic. Our White Sands + Seaspray scent is what we developed as our signature Rhode Island fragrance and it embodies everything we love about this state.
Why This Matters to Me
Rhode Island has one of the strongest small business communities I've encountered anywhere, and I think that's exactly why it holds onto so many unique experiences you can't get anywhere else. Every farm stand, every little curated shop, every hidden corner store represents someone's creativity and craft, and every dollar spent there goes directly back into keeping that alive.
So next time you're planning a trip to Rhode Island, skip the traffic and the predictable strip malls. Head for the quiet towns, the historic corners, and the farm stands that feel like they were made just for you to discover. That's where the real Rhode Island lives, and it's my favorite place for exactly that reason.
